Growing Tips For August

Keep feeding your garden plants and flower beds.  Remember - it's a race to get as many tomatoes, cucumbers, flowers, etc. as we can between now and our first killing frost, which is usually around September 22nd.  I like to use water soluble fertilizers like Miracle-Gro (We have it on sale now) every 10 to 14 days and I also use granular 10-10-10 fertilizer (Also on sale at Cashman Nursery).  Broadcast at the rate of 4 lbs. per 100 square feet every 5 weeks until frost.

We don't encourage you to prune or fertilize shrubs or nursery stock including perennials and roses any more until mid-September because our days are getting shorter now as our photo period decreases by several minutes daily.  The plants consequently are "Hardening off" now and their soft succulent growth is turning to wood, getting ready for winter.  If we keep feeding and pruning we artificially "push them" and delay their hardening off process.

You can continue planting all summer as all of our nursery stock is container grown.  When you plant our gorgeous plants they will have "a new lease on life" and they should do very well for you.

Please watch for our spruce, pine, and shade tree sale in September!  There will be many bargains on choice first class nursery stock and the weather will be cooler and easier for the plants to start.

We are hiring landscape crews now as most of our college employees are headed back to school.  So if you know of anyone looking for full-time work, please have them come out and see us!

Thank you for your business!
