Insect problems
For the past few weeks, we have had infection of insects, especially on Ornamental trees, Shurbs, and Roses.
Aphids and other sucking insects are usually attached to the underside of the leaves, causing the leaves to be disformed and rolled up. Contact sprays like malathion and sevin don't give up much control, so we are forced to use systemic insecticides like Isotox and Orthene. Bayer makes a new systemic that can be poured onto the ground around the base of the tree which will be brought up into the vascular system and remain in the plant for one year. The product works as a treatment and will last the whole 12 months of the year.

Roses are experiencing some aphid problems also.

The cottony psyllid is attacking some Black Ash (Fallgold ash), Mancana ash,  Northern Treasure ash, and Northern Gem ash. Use systemics on these as well.
Leaf miners are also present in many species of trees and shrubs. Use systemic insectides for control.
*Be sure to read and follow the directions on all chemicials that you are apply to your plants.*
Don't confuse leaf tatter with insect problems. We've also had a lot of windy days lately.

If you think your tree or shurb has an insect infection and you would like some help to try to treat it, bring us a sample of the infected leaves so we can take a look and diagnose the problem. Please bring in a large sample (a 12 inch branch with some infected leaves. If you could bring in leaves from a health part and/or new growth, that would also help) so that we can take a closer look and diagnose the problem properly.
