Pruning and Fertilizing Flowering Shrubs
Wait until shrubs have finished blooming before you prune them. "Enjoy the bloom", then prune! Spring Flowering Snowball Viburnum and Honeysuckles will bloom again next spring if you prune shortly after they have finished their spring show.
Shrubs that bloom all summer such as the Dwarf Spireas, Potentillas, Roses, etc. can be pruned anytime up to July 31st, since they bloom over such a long season. Pruning before July 31st allows the plants to "harden off" for winter. I like to fertilize severl times starting in April every 6 weeks with 10-10-10 fertilizer, but I never feed atfer the end of July.
