Q: When is it safe to plant tender annuals in the spring?
A:

Usually our last killing frost is around May 20th so most people wait until then to set out tender veggies such as tomatoes and peppers, annual geraniums, petunias, marigolds, etc. Be sure to check the weather because temperature changes vary from year to year.

Q: When should I prune my ornamental shrubs?
A:
This question is asked frequently.  A good general rule to follow is:  Prune shrubs that bloom in the spring like Lilacs, Bridalwreath Spireas, and Snowball Viburnums shortly after they are done blooming.  This way you can enjoy the blooms and the plant will have time to set new flower buds that will bloom next spring.  Shrubs that bloom all summer – on the new wood and on the old wood can be pruned anytime because they are forming new flower buds throughout the season.  Some shrubs in this category are Dwarf Spireas, Potentillas, and hardy shrub roses.  We recommend no corrective trimming after July 31st unless it is in the fall after a freeze.

Q: When can I plant nursery stock?
A:
With our modern refrigerated storage facilities we can supply hardy viable bare root shade trees, fruit trees, shrubs, hedges, vines, and berry plants well into mid to late June.  Why pay for potting when you can more easily handle bare root material and plant them into your own soil.  Cashman’s also has a complete line of container grown trees, shrubs, and perennials for your immediate selection.  Container grown material has been in the pot more than one year.  Our mature plants are well rooted but not root bound so they will take off with great vigor when you plant them or when we plant for you.  They will have a “New Lease on Life” when planted and are very easy to grow.  Our plant losses are very minimal because there is very little transplanting shock.  Cashman’s has thousands of container grown shade and ornamental trees in our “Pot-in-a-Pot” growing range that can be planted all summer and fall until freeze-up.

Q: What should I do to my perennials and shrubs now?
A:
The dead tops of perennials should be pruned off now so the new growth looks it’s best.  An application of a complete fertilizer like 10-10-10 (10% nitrogen, 10% phosphorous, and 10% potash) should be applied at the rate of ½ cup on the ground for new plants and 1 to 1½ cups for 2 or 3 year old plantings now and every 5 – 6 weeks until the end of July.

Q: When is it a good time to kill perennial weeds in the lawn?
A:
Weeds like dandelions, crabgrass, sandburs, etc can be sprayed now through the summer with post emergent herbicides, our qualified staff can help you identify the weeds to target good results.  Be sure to wear protective clothing, spray when the winds are less than 10 mph and the temperature is less than 86 degrees Fahrenheit so the droplets do not vaporize and be sure to protect desired plants.
